Showcasing Bermuda’s Talent and Spirit on the International Stage, Elevating Our Presence in the World of Taekwondo
About us
The Bermuda Taekwondo Federation (BTF) was founded in 2018 by 6th Dan Master Edmond Johnson, 5th Dan Master Ieja Caines, and 4th Dan Master Umar Durant—three passionate martial artists driven by a shared love for Taekwondo and Korean culture. Together, they envisioned a platform that would not only nurture and grow the art of Taekwondo in Bermuda but also bring the island’s talent to the international stage.
Our Beginnings
The BTF was born out of a deep respect for the rich traditions and values of Taekwondo. Master Johnson, Master Caines, and Master Durrant combined their expertise and dedication to create an organization that reflects the true spirit of the martial art—discipline, perseverance, and respect. They recognized Taekwondo as more than just a sport; it’s a way of life that empowers individuals, builds communities, and fosters cultural appreciation.
Our Mission
The BTF is committed to spreading the art and philosophy of Taekwondo across Bermuda. We aim to:
-
Inspire a lifelong love of Taekwondo and Korean culture.
-
Create opportunities for Bermudian athletes to excel both locally and globally.
-
Position Bermuda as a strong contender on the international Taekwondo stage, with aspirations of seeing Bermudian athletes compete in IOC-recognized games and festivals.
What We Offer
Through innovative programs, structured training, and a welcoming community, the BTF provides opportunities for everyone—from beginners to advanced practitioners—to:
-
Develop their skills in traditional and sport Taekwondo.
-
Gain access to coaching, referee training, and international-level competitions.
-
Build confidence, resilience, and discipline in a safe and inclusive environment.
Our Vision for Bermuda
We dream of a day when Bermuda becomes a recognized name in global Taekwondo. By nurturing our athletes and aligning with international standards, we aim to send Bermudian athletes to represent the island on the world’s biggest stages, including the Olympic Games and other prestigious events.
OUR VISION
Our vision is to elevate Taekwondo in Bermuda to new heights, while fostering a positive and inclusive community of practitioners. We aim to lift Taekwondo in Bermuda out of the dark ages and position it as a sport that is accessible, safe, and beneficial for all members of the community.
At the BTF, we believe that Taekwondo has the power to transform lives, instilling discipline, self-confidence, and respect for oneself and others. We are committed to promoting the values of Taekwondo both on and off the mat, and to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the Taekwondo community in Bermuda.
In addition to promoting Taekwondo, we are committed to working to destroy the gang culture that exists in our community. Through our programs and services, we hope to provide an alternative to the negative influences that can lead young people down destructive paths. We believe that by fostering a positive and supportive community, we can make a real difference in the lives of young people and contribute to the overall well-being of our community.
Through our commitment to excellence, safety, and community, we strive to position Taekwondo as a valuable and respected sport in Bermuda, and to create a brighter future for all members of our community.
